Below is latest news sent by SRUG (Southwark Rail Users Group), a member of the campaign to Save the South London Line. The other campaign members include Clapham Transport Users’ Group, Lambeth Public Transport Group, the two major hospitals - King's And SLAM, all local elected representatives, and the four main political parties.
SRUG is a group for local rail users of routes and stations in mid-central Southwark, serving Peckham Rye, Nunhead, South Bermondsey, Queens Road, Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, North Dulwich. SRUG aims to learn about the local rail system to make informed comments and secure improvements to stations and services. The current main issue is the campaign to reverse cuts on direct train services into central London.

Press Release from the Save the South London Line Campaign
THE VITAL RAIL LINK THAT SHOULD NOT BE SCRAPPED
The campaigners battling to save the South London Line have published a short report which argues that it is vital to retain the line if South London is ever to enjoy a train service which runs at a tube-like frequency. click here for the report
The report shows that key stations in South London will suffer if the South London Line is withdrawn.
· Peckham Rye's 10 minute service to London Bridge will be reduced to a train every 15 minutes. It will lose its evening and Sunday services to Victoria altogether.
· Denmark Hill, which serves the major Maudsley and Kings College hospitals, will lose all its direct services to London Bridge and its evening and Sunday services to Victoria.
· Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road will lose all their direct services to both Victoria and London Bridge.
The report argues that, instead of cutting services in South London, Transport for London and the rail companies should be looking to enhance services. It makes a number of suggestions which could improve the rail service in South London for just a moderate cost.
John Stewart, the Co-ordinator of Lambeth Public Transport Group, said "The South London Line is a vital link for South London. There should be no question of scrapping it. Indeed, there should be more trains stopping in South London rather than fewer."

latest news on the Save the South London Line Campaign
Message from Southwark Rail Users' Group
The campaign continues on a number of levels. Visit www.southwarkrailusers.net to keep up to date.
Two key recent events reported below. Also don't forget - if you use Denmark Hill Station - 8am Tuesday 1st December a media photo event. Come and support. see link on www.southwarkrailusers.net

2. Meeting with TfL on 24th November - News from the Save the South London Line Campaign (** see at end for campaign members)
Subject: TfL Recognises Need For Central London Links from South London Line stations
At a meeting on 24th November with stakeholder groups in South London, TfL recognised one of the main objectives of campaigners, the need to keep radial services to Central London for current South London Line stations. TfL has proposed a variety of short-listed options for keeping service to Victoria, including diverting the East London Line from Clapham Junction, introducing a Victoria-
Bellingham service and making current Victoria-Dartford services run all day, guaranteeing for Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye all day trains to Victoria. This is in contrast to TfL's earlier assertions that SLL passengers should take ELLX to Clapham Junction and change for Victoria there.
However the Save South London Line Campaign is calling out for the Department for Transport to review all terminating services at London Bridge, based on impact and future demand. Network Rail has acknowledged that keeping the South London Line to London Bridge is possible but would require elaborate signalling or the removal of other services. The Campaign has argued that the cutting of SLL would be a rupture of links and hence impact disproportionately. Negotiations with the DfT over this will continue.
The Campaign group is also looking for a Lawyer with experience in Judicial Review proceedings. Anyone able to help?
** The SSLL Campaign is a consortium of elected representatives from all 4 main parties, plus the Southwark Rail Users' Group, Clapham Transport Users Group, Lambeth Public Transport Group, Kings College Hospital, and SLAM (South London & Maudsley).

Network Rail survey of stations
Message from Southwark Rail Users' Group for all local rail users
Network Rail is launching the first ever Nationwide stations research project asking passengers what is important to them at their local station, where they would like to see investment and what are their priorities. They say they want to know what passengers want from stations and what's important to them. See further information in their Press Release below.
This seems an opportunity not be missed to tell them what we think of our own stations - Peckham Rye, Queens Road Peckham, South Bermondsey, East Dulwich, Nunhead, Denmark Hill.
Let's get lots of local users taking part so they really get the message about what needs to be improved. If you need another incentive - you might win an annual season ticket or £2000.if you take part!
The survey can be accessed online at http://www.networkrail.co.uk/actionstations...

Network Rail Press Release Thursday 12 Nov 2009
FIRST EVER PASSENGER RESEARCH ABOUT STATIONS LAUNCHED
Network Rail today launched the first ever piece of passenger research specific targeting stations, as it unveiled its plans to improve thousands of stations across the country in a five year, £3.25bn, programme of investment.
Dave Ward, Network Rail's route director for Kent, said: "Stations are the railways' shop-front and they have been ignored for too long. With the punctuality of the railways now running at record levels and our major programme to boost capacity and provide more seats on trains underway, we can now look at other priorities and stations and are at the top of the list.
"Much is planned in the area over the coming years and we must invest wisely. We shouldn't try and second guess passengers but ask them what they want from stations and what's important to them. We need to listen to passengers and use their views on stations to guide our decisions."
In a pioneering move, Network Rail is launching the first ever Nationwide stations research project asking passengers what is important to them at their local station, where they would like to see investment and what are their priorities. The survey can be accessed online at www.networkrail.co.uk/actionstations
The research project will kick off later this month, last for up to three months and involve on-line surveys, telephone surveys and focus groups to really get into the detail of what passengers rate as the most important things to have at stations. The results from the survey, along with the station champions report expected shortly from the Department for Transport, will feed into a much wider review on stations, led by Network Rail. This will take place over the next twelve months involving every train operator, rail funding partner and interest group in the country.
At the same time Network Rail said over 150 stations on routes to, from and across Kent will benefit from investment between now and spring 2014 with sums ranging from tens of thousands of pounds to millions. The improvements to be made include things like:
* New passenger information systems
* New lifts and stairways
* New toilets, waiting rooms and shelters
* New, longer or resurfaced platforms
* Bigger or refurbished ticket offices and ticket halls
* Better lighting and CCTV
* Smarter stations - redecoration, more seating and retail opportunities
Nationally, over 2,000 stations will benefit from this £3.25bn investment.
Notes to Editors:
* Network Rail is also publishing an information booklet about stations and the research entitled 'Action Stations'
* Tens of thousands of leaflets will today be handed out to passengers inviting them to take part in the on-line survey
* All those who complete the survey will be entered into a free prize draw to win a season ticket (value up to £2,000)
* The investment announced today does not just come from Network Rail funds but pulls together all the investment being targeted at stations over the next five years and includes sources such as the DfT, train operators, Scottish Government, Welsh Assembly Government, PTEs, local authorities and other third parties
* The list of stations is not exhaustive and represents a 'snap-shot' in time and may include stations that are in the early stages of being planned but we, or our partners, are keen to see come to fruition over the next five years

Frank's Cafe & Campari bar
The Hannah Barry Gallery recently wowed the Venice Bienniale with its Peckham Pavilion. Now they are wowing lots of visitors to the sculpture exhibition and Frank's Cafe & Campari bar, on the roof of the multi storey car park.
A lot of these visitors come to Peckham from London Bridge and Victoria by overground rail. Their great discovery is how close Peckham is to central London. This shows the importance of the local campaign to publicise the importance of the direct rail services to London Bridge and Victoria, and stop the planned cuts.
See Peckham raises the roof and save our rail services for more information about the exhibition & Frank's Cafe, and how to support the local rail services campaign.
The exhibition and Frank's cafe is open every Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 10pm. It is really worth a visit. You can get to it via the lift right beside the entrance to the cinema on Rye Lane, up to the 6th floor and then walk up the levels through the sculpture exhibition to the top.
See the stunning pictures and reviews through the website: <http://www.peckhamvision.org/wiki/Hannah_Barry_Gallery#BOLD_TENDENCIES_III_.2830_June_-_30_September.2C_11am-10pm_Thurs_to_Sun.29>
See short video at: http://www.jotta.com/magazine/video/207/between-you-and-i
The exhibition ends on 30 September. Make sure you don't miss it! Take advantage of this superb weather at the moment and enjoy the whole thing.
If you care about the rail services, make sure you sign the petition and email the Rail Minister and the London Mayor, see here for the details: http://www.peckhamvision.org/brg/rail-cuts

The two local MPs Harriet Harman and Tessa Jowell will be there leading the Rally.
Lots of media will be present, so do please come and give your support if you are around at that time. Come and get to know other fellow campaigners!
ACTION TO COLLECT SIGNATURES & GIVE OUT FLYERS
We hope it will gear up the campaign to the next level. Already there are over 1000 signatures on the petition. But we need thousands more. So we need you to spread the word to fellow rail users, and to carry the petition with you to get signatures.
See here for petition and flyers to print out to take with you on your travels...
LATEST NEWS
A lot has been happening and we will do a round up of news soon. In the meantime we have successfully put pressure on TfL and they now say they will do a review of south London rail services in the next few months. That is just the start of getting this decision to cut services reversed.

Dear SRUG member
Here is some more news about the campaign to save our direct rail services into central London.
CONTINUING CUTS
Our latest flyers spell out the significance of the effect, on each of our local stations, of the continuing cuts. For example, from Peckham Rye the services are being cut in HALF:
* Last year there were 8 trains an hour from Peckham Rye to London Bridge, now there are 6. In 2012 there will be 4.
* Victoria services face new cuts. There are 4 an hour now. In 2012 there will be 2.
In our A5 flyer you can see the effect on each of the Southwark stations.
FLYERS - GET THE MESSAGE OUT
We need to get the message out to all who use our local stations. We have designed some A6 pocket size flyers that you can print out for your own local station. These are attached at the end:
* can you carry some with you in your pocket or bag, and give them out to fellow rail users at your local station whenever you travel?
* where better to find people interested in this, than in your own local station?
MORE ACTIONS
We will email later with news of more you can do to help spread the word to all local rail users.
In the meantime, don't forget to
* sign the web petition
* join the Facebook group
* email the Rail Minister (Lord Adonis) & the Mayor,

Secret deal to cut local rail services
If you use the local rail services you will need to know the information below.
Southwark Rail Users' Group (SRUG) :
Peckham Rye, Nunhead, South Bermondsey, Queens Road, Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, North Dulwich.
________________________________________________
It was discovered recently that there was a secret deal between TfL and DfT (Dept for Transport) to axe the planned Victoria-Bellingham service (via Denmark Hill & Peckham Rye). A campaign to reverse this is starting:
* sign the web petition
* join the Facebook group
* further background -

The campaign is being initiated jointly by Southwark Rail Users' Group, Clapham Transport Users' Group, the major hospitals at Denmark Hill, and local elected representatives - MPs, London Assembly Member, and ward councillors. The latest decision, like the one to axe the Victoria-Denmark Hill-London Bridge service in 2012, shows the low priority the rail industry gives to our inner south London connections into central London. We have to change that. Take action now!____________________________________________

SRUG (Southwark Rail Users Group) News
Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG) LATEST NEWS
FIRST PUBLIC MEETING
SRUG held a lively and informative public meeting on 17th November 2008, about a range of issues facing local rail users. These included the imminent closure of the East Croydon-London Bridge service, the planned closure of the South London Line in 2012, the delays to the planning for the East London Line Extension through Peckham Rye to Clapham Junction, and the state of local stations. Over 70 people were present along with a representative from each of 6 railway companies, and two passenger watchdog organisations. It was a very fruitful discussion which has provided the basis for effective future dialogue. See here for minutes and web links including diagrams and meeting presentations. http://www.peckhamvision.org/brg/srug-meeting-notes-17-november-08. If you have any difficulty in accessing this, email SRUG@bellenden.net
The following are brief reports on news since the meeting, on some of the current issues in our local rail services. Detailed background to these and other issues can be found in the November 08 meeting minutes. There is also some information on the developing SRUG webpages at www.peckhamvision.org/brg/srug
EAST CROYDON - LONDON BRIDGE SERVICE via Peckham Rye
The off peak 2tph (trains per hour) service was stopped by the train operator Southern Rail in mid-December. A few trains still run during peak hours. There was an outcry as there was not adequate information and consultation and few users of the service knew about it until the last moment. Tessa Jowell MP carried out a user survey and we are promised the results soon. The franchise for Southern's services is up for renewing this year, and she has written to the potential franchisees saying she will support any bid that reinstates the East Croydon link and looks at the uneven distribution of trains in the peak. Southern Rail are due to conduct a review of the new timetable in February. If you used this service, as a link through beyond to Gatwick, Brighton etc, as well as to Croydon itself, please email Tessa Jowell to give your views.
SOUTH LONDON LINE (SLL) Victoria - London Bridge via Peckham Rye
The rail industry still plan to stop the all day and evening 2tph service on the SLL, in 2012. It would cut the direct link between Denmark Hill and London Bridge, the direct link between Queens Rd and Victoria, and reduce the trains to London Bridge from Peckham Rye by two an hour. A major reason given for cutting the SLL is that there will not be enough terminating platforms space at London Bridge station after the rebuilding which is due to start in 2012. We discovered that it is in fact possible to increase the platform space to accommodate the SLL trains, and had this confirmed by Network Rail at the SRUG meeting. Assembly member Valerie Shawcross who was there, says she has now taken it up with Network Rail, TfL Rail and Dept of Transport, and it will also be included in the London Assembly Transport Committee's recommendations on Rail Overcrowding. This report will be available at www.london.gov.uk/assembly/transport/index.jsp the week before the Assembly Transport Committee meeting on 12 February. The continuing strong feeling of local rail users is that due regard has not been given to the important roles the SLL plays in inner south London travel, and it needs to be kept and not stopped. If you want to support the campaign to keep this service make sure you see the Transport Committee's report and email your views to valerie.shawcross@london.gov.uk
EAST LONDON LINE EXTENSION phase 2 (ELLX2):
This service would bring TfL-run overground trains from Canada Water (interchange with Jubilee Line) to Clapham Junction via Queens Rd, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill. There has been continuous wrangling between Mayor Boris Johnson and the Department of Transport on the last £30m of the £100m funding. These wrangles continue now with the Dept of Transport saying they will not pay their share unless TfL finds more money to build a new station at Surrey Canal Road in South Bermondsey. Decisions have to be made very soon if the extension can be built in time for 2012 the planned date. The ELLX2 continues to be used to justify the stopping of the SLL in 2012 even though it provides no services into central London stations, and can never therefore be a substitute for the crucial rail links into central London to London Bridge and Victoria. But the new service is welcome as it would fill the gap in the Orbital railway, and open up east and west routes from this part of London. Emails to the decision makers in this wrangle might help to get the wrangling stopped and the decision made in time email Geoff.Hoon@dft.gsi.gov.uk, AND mayor@london.gov.uk
PECKHAM RYE STATION
Southern Rail have in the last few months started some repair and improvement works, and the station has at last been included in the Government's NSIP (National Station Improvement Work) for more substantial improvements. We have managed to make contact with the rail company managers of the programme to try to influence the quality of the work so it enhances its historic architecture rather than ruins it, and to create the beginning of a channel to the decision makers for users' views on what changes are needed for station users.
SOUTH CENTRAL FRANCHISE
The Government decides which Train Operating Companies (TOCs) will operate the franchise for services in particular parts of the country, and has selected 4 TOCs to bid for the new South Central Franchise which will run from 2009 to 2015. These are Ned Railways, National Express, Stagecoach Rail, and Govia - the owner of Southern Rail, the current operator. The services are all those which run through Peckham Rye to London Bridge. This is the time to try to influence what these companies put in their bids to try to get the franchise. They are all keen to hear from local rail users about their travel needs and their views on the services. This is an opportunity not to miss if you are a rail user. Go online to get more info and give your views asap (18 Feb deadline).

loss of East Croydon-London Bridge service
Email from Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG)
Do you use rail services to London Bridge or services to East Croydon from our local stations? Do you know that the East Croydon to London Bridge two trains an hour service, which goes through East Dulwich, Peckham Rye, Queens Rd, and North Dulwich stations, is being cut in December? This cuts our local link to East Croydon and Gatwick, and cuts two trains an hour to London Bridge. If this affects you, whichever constituency you are in, please respond to Tessa Jowell's on-line survey - see below. If you live in Camberwell & Peckham constituency you could also usefully email Harriet Harman MP
Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG) covers rail routes and stations serving Peckham Rye, Nunhead, South Bermondsey, Queens Road, Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, North Dulwich.

EMAIL FROM TESSA JOWELL MP
I hope you do not mind me sending you this email but it is about an issue that I know is of importance to many people living in my constituency.
I am concerned that a new rail timetable that commences on 14 December will remove two trains per hour from the off-peak timetable on the service running to London Bridge through Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, Tulse Hill, North Dulwich and East Dulwich.
I opposed these changes with Southern Rail and the Department for Transport but, surprisingly, a passenger representative group supported them and they will now go ahead. The new timetable provides four off-peak trains to and from London Bridge every hour instead of the current six. The trains to be removed are the ones that run every half hour from London Bridge to/from Smitham via East Croydon. The peak service is unaffected.
I want to hear your views about how these changes will affect you. Please take a few minutes to complete my survey by clicking on the link below or by pasting it into your browser:
www.tessajowell.net
You can be assured that I will use your response to support local rail users in getting the best possible service when timetables are being revised.
With best wishes,
Tessa Jowell

REMINDER - SOUTHWARK RAIL USERS GROUP (SRUG)
Date: Monday 17th November 6.30pm - 8.30pm.
Venue: Bussey building, 133 Rye Lane, SE15, opposite Blenheim Grove
Topic: Local Rail Services.
Exhibition & refreshments from 6pm
Please let us know if you are coming, if you haven't replied yet.
You will be especially interested in this meeting if you:
* use the services to London Bridge or East Croydon - a protest is growing against Southern Rail's decision to cut the service next month.
* use the Loop Line from Denmark Hill to London Bridge or from Queens Rd Peckham to Victoria. Network Rail will be explaining why the decision to cut the link was made. We may be able to challenge some of the assumptions.
* are keen to get the East London Line link to Clapham Junction agreed - there will be a report from TfL on progress.
* want services to Victoria improved from Nunhead, Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill - possibly good news on this.
* think the stations need improving in some way - the train companies responsible will be present.

rail services - Mon 17 Nov 6.30pm
Hi
Are you a local rail user? Can you see what needs to be improved and wish you could get that across to someone responsible? Would you like to know more about how your local rail system works? Do you have any questions or other comments you would like to put directly to those responsible?
Please let me know if you would like to come to the meeting of the Southwark Rail Users Group (SRUG) on Monday 17th November meeting 6.30pm-8.30pm, exhibition 6pm.
This will be an important opportunity:
* to make your views known as a local rail user to the people who can improve matters;
* to learn about the railway system and the technical matters that constrain what services can be provided, so we can make informed comments.
We will be focussing on rail routes that come and go through the Peckham area, and serving stations in mid Southwark: Peckham Rye, Nunhead, South Bermondsey, Queens Road, Denmark Hill, East Dulwich, North Dulwich.
We will have speakers from Network Rail, TfL (Transport for London), Passenger Focus, London Travel Watch. The four train companies bidding for the South Central Franchise will also be present to listen to users.
Topics covered will include:
* progress on East London Line Extension phase 2,
* London Bridge restructuring and effect on our local services,
* planned cut in South London Loop Line,
* planned cut in Peckham to East Croydon service,
* service changes to Victoria, Blackfriars and London Bridge.
* station improvements,

* to make your views known as a local rail user to the people who can improve matters;
* station improvements,
* travel improvements.
